Did you ever hear about the 5 Second Rule? It’s a concept developed by Mel Robbins. She actually wrote a whole book about this and it’s amazing! You should read it!
The idea is simple. Count down from 5 to 1 and then take immediate action towards a goal or a task. Why? This will help you stop overthinking and start doing.
Let’s take your workouts as an example. If you are not a total fitness nut, chances are high that there were occasions where you were sitting on the sofa contemplating if you should go to the gym or not. Am I right or am I right? And I bet you came up with a ton of things you could do instead that all of a sudden jumped up the priority ladder.
“I didn’t call my grandma in a while. I should really call her…like, right now!!”
“The garage is a mess. I need to clean that!”
“OMG, Dancing with the Stars is on. If I miss this now, I will never ever get a second chance to see it!”
And before you know it, it’s dinner time and now it’s too late to go to the gym anyway.
Let’s apply the 5 Second Rule instead. Same scenario, you are sitting on the sofa thinking about the gym. Now simply count down 5-4-3-2-1, get up, get dressed, and out the door you are. Your brain won’t have time to get the excuses-ball rolling and you will get your workout in. Win – win!
You can use this rule for everything. Not only for your workouts. A paper that needs to be finished? 5-4-3-2-1-Go! Cleaning your house? 5-4-3-2-1-Go! A phone call you’ve been trying to avoid? 5-4-3-2-1-Go!
Whatever situation comes up, remember the 5 Second Rule and become witness how sh*t actually gets done instead of postponed. You will feel amazing! I promise!
